Presidents Report - Update on IALE 2003 Congress

It's now a little over a year till the World Congress in Darwin. Time is going quickly, but plans for the congress are well underway. Diane Pearson has been doing a great job of putting things in place. The conference logo and theme are shown above, and the new web pages will be up shortly at http://iale.ntu.edu.au. In addition, we have appointed Conference Catalysts as conference organisers, who will be handling most of the congress logistics.

The scientific program is also shaping up, and we have an interesting collection of symposia being offered, as indicated in the table. We currently have several symposia a day but still plenty of room for open and poster sessions.

Be sure to keep up to date with developments and make sure to plan to be in Darwin in July next year. I hope you will consider contributing a paper and/or helping out at the congress. If you have any ideas concerning the congress, please don't hesitate to let me or Diane know.

Finally, I'd like to introduce our new treasurer for IALE-Oz. Chris Meakin from the NT Dept of Lands Planning has kindly agreed to take on the task, and we welcome him to the position.

CHRISTOPHER MEAKIN - TREASURER

Christopher Meakin has lived in the Darwin area for the last thirty odd years. After various career changes, which included nursing and anthropology, but mostly Horticulture and self employment, he went back to University (NTU) and gained a B.Sc. (Biological Sciences and GIS). Since then he has completed a project mapping the forests and woodlands of the NT for the National Forest Inventory, and is currently responsible for managing the NT component of the Land Use/Land Management Mapping Project coordinated by the Bureau of Rural Sciences. His current interests include web technologies and quantifying land information uncertainty. As treasurer, he will be drawing heavily on experiences gained owning and managing a business for 6 years.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Savanna Landscapes in Northern Australia - Fire and Heterogeneity

The Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Savannas Management and the ARC Key Centre for Tropical Wildlife Management are holding an important conference and linked workshops on the management of fire and its implications for wildlife. The Conference will be held at the Northern Territory University, Darwin from 8 to 12 July 2002.

The conference is built around two related themes. The first deals directly with fire and management practice. It will summarise much of what is known about fire in savannas, including fire incidence, methods of measuring and describing fire patterns in space and time, and the ecological and resource management implications of those patterns. The second theme will focus more closely on the effects of fire on wildlife habitats, and in particular the role of fire in maintaining or damaging wildlife habitat values and implications of the associated changes in landscape heterogeneity for the dynamics of wildlife populations.

The insights of a large number of experienced north Australian researchers and resource managers will be supplemented by a distinguished group of international guests, who will help place the north Australian experience in a global context, by drawing on their knowledge of recent developments overseas. In addition to the formal presentation of a wide range of papers, there will be opportunity for less formal interaction among participants in short workshop sessions. The goal of these sessions will be to attempt a synthesis of formal presentations and a statement of their implications for future research in northern Australia.

For registration details please go to the WebSite: www.wildlife.ntu.edu.au/activities1.html
or
Fax Julian Gorman on (08) 8946 7088 to have the details sent to you.
