FROM THE EDITORS

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this issue of the IALE-Oz Newsletter. With the approach of the IALE World Congress in Darwin, there is a lot of extra material which did not fit easily into the newsletter, so they have been sent as separate attachments accompanying this email. These include an IALE World Congress brochure (spread the word…) and Registration Form (see you there!). There are some great discounts on registration fees for IALE members attending the 2003 World Congress, which is a great reason to remember to resubscribe- or to sign up some of your friends and colleagues! A membership renewal form can be found at the end of this newsletter, as well as a form for new members. There are plans to hold an IALE-Oz Chapter meeting during the World Congress, so we would encourage all of you to attend and have your say about what you want from IALE-Oz in the future. Some of the items for discussion include the organisation of local landscape ecology meetings and workshops to be held "downunder" over the next few years.

We wish you all a happy holiday season and an enjoyable summer.

IALE 2003 CONGRESS ORGANISATION UPDATE

July is getting close very quickly, so organising the World Congress has been keeping me incredibly busy over the last few months but as things are coming together it's looking like it's going to be a great event. So don't miss it!

Most of the information you require to attend this event is now up on the website http://www.iale.ntu.edu.au Abstracts have been called for and can be submitted online until 31st Jan, and online registration should be up and running very soon. If you have any difficulties with any of this please let me know.

There are going to be 20 symposia covering a range of topical landscape ecological issues but there is also plenty of space for open sessions and posters, so get those abstracts in now! Our keynotes should prove very interesting and I'm sure they will provide controversial and thought provoking presentations. They are going to be presented by Dr David Bowman, Drs Barbel and Gunther Tress and Gary Fry, Prof Paul Opdam and Dr Kevin McGarigal.

As you can see from the registration brochure (attached) we are planning to have quite a sociable event. Allowing plenty of time for networking and catching up with old colleagues and friends. We intend to make good use of the beautiful dry season evenings in Darwin and have a welcome reception on the lawns of Parliament House, happy hour drinks at the wonderful Botanic gardens and have a special IALE 21st birthday dinner under the stars in Bicentennial Park on the Esplanade! And then there's the Top End BBQ - if you haven't tried crocodile this'll be your big chance! We have also come up with an exciting "accompanying persons tour package" so there is no excuse to leave your partners at home. And so you don't feel like you've missed out when your partner's return telling you what a great time they've had touring around, we have also put together an interesting array of field trips. These range from local academic trips to particular researchers field sites, to local commercial tours visiting places like Kakadu and Litchfield National Park and the wonderful Territory Wildlife Park, to interstate koala workshops and trips to the wheatbelt, and our New Zealand colleagues have put together a very tempting trip of their spectacular landscapes. I just wish I had time to do some of these!

For any of you who have been keeping an eye on our website and might be a little confused and think we have changed our conference organisers, Convention Catalysts have just changed their name and are now The Best Conference and Events company. I'm very confident that they are going to live up to their name, as Gaye Messer, who has been working with us, is doing an excellent job. I don't know what I'd do without her!

Anyway check out the registration brochure for more information on aspects of the congress and keep your eye on the website for any updates.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you all in Darwin next July.

General Secretary

MEET THE NEW TREASURER OF IALE-OZ

Hi - I'm Julian and I've just taken over as the new treasurer of IALE-Oz. I work for the Key Centre for Tropical Wildlife Management at the Northern Territory University as a Research Associate. My research interests involve sustainable utilisation of native species and I am involved in a research project investigating the feasibility of small scale enterprise in Aboriginal communities utilising plants products (the final report will be available through RIRDC in a few months time if anyone is interested!). I have lived up in the Top End for 4 years after working at CSIRO Division of Wildlife Ecology in Canberra looking at the possible impacts of global change on Australian temperate forests and land-use conflict resolution and change in the Western Division of NSW. I'm looking forward to meeting all of the IALE-Oz members at the World Congress next July (we are running a field trip "Indigenous harvest of natural resources and implications for landscape health" if anyone is interested).

Please could members send their completed membership renewal forms for 2003 to me at the Key Centre for Tropical Wildlife Management, Northern Territory University, Darwin NT 0909.

If you have any questions regarding payment of your subscription please don't hesitate to contact me on (08) 8946 6574 or julian.gorman@ntu.edu.au

RAGING RUNOFF

In September, John Ludwig presented an invited paper at a special Chapman Conference sponsored by the American Geophysical Union, which was held in Taos, New Mexico, USA. This conference was on the eco-hydrology of semiarid landscapes, and aimed to bring together ecologists and hydrologists to work on common issues of land management in these landscapes. John talked on what kinds of eco-hydrological studies were being conducted in Australia. His talk was titled "Raging runoff: quantifying obstructions to flows on semiarid hillslopes", and he admits that about the only thing raging was his running off at the mouth. John is leading the writing of a synthesis paper with co-authors from the USA and Europe based on the symposium session he participated in.

www.landscape-ecology.info/summerschool.htm

The Summer School and its Aims
Are you a young researcher at an early stage in your PhD studies? Then this course is your chance. It has been designed to:

  • Support the training and development of the next generation of landscape ecologists,
  • Allow young scientists from around the world to make contact with established scholars to reflect upon current issues in Landscape Ecology in a critical way, and
  • Enable young scientists to develop and discuss their own thinking in the context of other approaches and perspectives.

Graduation and Accreditation
Students will graduate from the Summer School at a ceremony organised as part of the World Congress, with a certificate of attendance showing the number of hours of postgraduate study represented by the course, so that their work can be accredited by their home institutions.

The Summer School Themes
The teaching at the Summer School has been organised around a number of session themes:

  • 'Rio+10' and the landscape agenda
  • Understanding pattern and process in sustainable landscapes
  • Cultural landscapes and sustainability
  • Participation and transdisciplinary approaches to landscape ecology
  • Using GIS and other tools for developing and evaluating scenarios of landscape change

The Lecturers
The lecturers of the Summer School have been drawn from the international landscape ecology community. They have been selected on the basis of their excellence in teaching and research.

  • Dr Marion Potschin, who holds teaching and research posts at the University of Basel & the University of Nottingham, England
