WHAT IS LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY?

Landscape ecology is a discipline that transcends the boundaries between geography and ecology.  It integrates biological, physical and social aspects of nature and considers the interdependence of all factors that go towards making up the landscape.

IALE Definition

Landscape ecology is the study of spatial variation in landscapes at a variety of scales.  It includes the biophysical and societal causes and consequences of landscape heterogeneity.  Above all it is broadly interdisciplinary.' Principles of Landscape ecology focus on:

  • Distribution patterns of landscape elements or ecosystems

  • Flows of animals, plants, energy, minerals and water among landscape elements (landscape functioning and processes)

  • Ecological changes in the landscape mosaic over time

  • Understanding the whole

  • Maintaining quality of landscapes
